A participatory citizen science program on the industrial wasteland of the Forges de Trignac to implicate the inhabitants into the restoration of their local natural living environnement.

MY ROLE

Space Designer

I worked with St-Nazaire city for 6 months, to reimagine with the inhabitants and the local collectivity a new becoming for their forges wasteland of Trignac.

THE CHALLENGE

Inhabitants of Trignac with the climate change and the urban developpement, are getting nowadays  more exposed to the environnemental risks due to the historical past industrial development of St-Nazaire. How could we reinvest an abandoned industrial wasteland while engaging human activities in favor of biodiversity ?

UNDERSTANDING THE POPULATIONS

Social precarity

Acute lack of ressource due to restraint local budget and global city developpement pressure.

 

Generation gap

The population is shifting from a past generation of labor workers to a new generation of young families.

City devitalization

The inhabitant are facing a decline of local activities after the ending of the economic activity of the Forges of Trignac.

GOALS

Restore the living environnement

Implicate at the core of the project the inhabitants to experiment a reappropriation by the individuals  of their local environnement.

Federate social inclusion

Rethink the relationship of the inhabitants with their close natural and historical heritage on a context of  a polluted and degraded environnement. 

Initiate frugal practices

Restore a new symbiosis in a  common urban environnement of the activities of humans and the other living beings with a common sutainable and participatory experience.

Ethnographic research to identify risk factors.

As the Forges of  Trignac, remaining nowadays as an abandon monument, the local inhabitant start to question the future impact the site could have in their daily living environnement.  Between the sign of the decline of an industrial heritage for the older generations and the sign of the decline of the current living environnement for the younger generations, the question of the future of the Forges of  Trignac need according to the local collectivity to take in count with the climate change the adding risks in case of marine submergence of the spreading of environnemental pollution.

THE SOLUTION

The Pionners.

To best reconcile the needs of residents with those of the environment, the project was then designed in local consultation to allow the active involvement of residents through the redevelopment of the Forges de Trignac wastelands. It's the development of a citizen participatory science program which has been retain by residents.  

 

The project focus around 2 main pedagogical workshops :

LABORATOIRE DU VIVANT, an explorative workshop based on a diagnosis of the existing biodiversity on the wasteland and the farming of bioindicators species.


L'OBSERVATOIRE DES DEPOLLUEURS, a remediation workshop based on the identification of polluting soil and the sensibilisation to the remediation species role in the soil depollution.
